History and description

The first organ of the St. Laurentius’ Church was built in 1862 in an 18th century organ-case by Lodewijk Ypma (Alkmaar). After the completion of a new organ, built by B. Pels & son (Alkmaar) in 1950, the instrument was moved to the Petrus en Pauluschurch at Dinteloord (Noord-Brabant) in 1951.

The  Pels-organ was placed at the choir-gallery, the shape of the front was adapted to the rose window at the west wall of the church; for that reason the main organ was given a divided case.

In the 1960s the ideas about liturgy and church-music changed a lot; for this reason, and to avoid further problems with the hot-air heating system in the church, the organ was placed downstairs at the floor of the northern transept in 1977, close to the liturgical centre of the church. On that occasion

all the divisions of the organ were united in one case.
